FKM is the standard abbreviation for Fluorocarbon Rubber, also referred to as FPM in the international standard ISO 1629. It is a synthetic rubber renowned for its exceptional resistance to high temperatures, oils, and chemicals, making it one of the "gold standards" in high-performance elastomers.

I. Core Properties and Benefits
FKM's widespread use stems from its exceptional combination of properties:
Excellent High-Temperature Resistance:
The continuous operating temperature range is typically -20°C to +200°C.
Specially formulated grades can withstand short-term temperatures of +300°C or as low as -40°C.
Excellent Chemical and Fluid Resistance:
Excellent oil and fuel resistance: Virtually no swelling occurs in a wide range of lubricating oils, hydraulic fluids, fuels, and gear oils.
Resistant to a wide range of chemicals: including acids (weak to moderately strong), bases, halogens, hydrocarbons, certain esters, and ethers.
Disadvantages: Poor resistance to polar organic solvents such as ketones, acetone, and ethyl acetate, as well as ammonia, hot water, and high-pressure steam.
Excellent Aging and Weathering Resistance:
It is extremely resistant to ozone, oxidation, and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and unlike ordinary rubber, it will not crack or age, resulting in an extremely long service life.
Excellent Mechanical Properties:
It has excellent tensile strength, tear resistance, and abrasion resistance, maintaining excellent performance especially at high temperatures.
Low Gas Permeability:
The dense molecular structure provides excellent barrier properties to a variety of gases (such as oxygen and nitrogen), making it suitable for gas sealing applications.
Flame Retardancy:
It is inherently non-flammable and self-extinguishing, meeting the fire safety requirements of many industries.
Main Application Areas
Due to the aforementioned properties, FKM is widely used in industries with stringent sealing material requirements:
Automotive: This is the largest application area. It is used in crankshaft oil seals, valve stem seals, O-rings, fuel injection system seals, turbocharger hoses, and other components, capable of withstanding the high temperatures and oily environments found within the engine compartment.
Aerospace: Used for sealing fuel, hydraulic oil, lubricating oil, and flame-retardant hydraulic fluid (Skydrol) systems, capable of withstanding extreme temperature and pressure fluctuations.
Petrochemical: Used in oilfield equipment, valve seals, pump diaphragms, and hoses, capable of withstanding harsh chemical media and high temperatures.
Semiconductor manufacturing: Used in high-purity chemical transfer and sealing systems, it exhibits extremely low extractables, preventing process contamination.
Other Industries: Widely used in hydraulic and pneumatic systems, the food and pharmaceutical industries (special grades that comply with FDA and other standards are required), and any harsh environment requiring long-term, reliable sealing.
